Christmas number 1

It's that time of year again (just after x factor/pop idol/popstars etc etc) have finished when thought turns to the christmas number one. Now i'm not that bothered about who's number one anymore at any time of the year really, as it's kind of lost its meaning a bit, with all the downloads and what not. Downloads are a good idea don't get me wrong, smaller bands can now get recognition and a bit more money in the coffers just on downloads alone. This year however i'm going to take a bit more of an interest, i've not really been that interested in music this year, and i'm making it my new years resolution to unearth a few new bands to listen to in 2008, ala 2005 with the Kaiser Chiefs, Killers, Bravery, Bloc Party etc.

So who's running for the coverted Christmas number one this year:

1. The obvious one - Leon from x factor. Probably didn't really win it but that's a whole different story. He's releasing a cover of 'when you believe'. Very Christmassy, although i don't think it sounds as good on the radio as he did singing it live on the x factor shows.

2. Blake - The band of choirboys who formed on facebook are releasing a copy of White Christmas. Not the best christmas song, but certainly a classic.

3. Sugababes - My favourite. The second release from their new album change is the signiture track. Following on the back of 'about you now' the 3 piece just keep getting better and better.

4. Kate Nash - Maybe an outside contender with her new single 'Pumpkin soup' .

Verdict: My choice for number one would be Sugababes. I'd love them (or anyone else for that matter) to break the monopoly of having a reality number one. I think most bands shy away from releasing at Christmas due to the fact that most reality singles are nailed on from number one, and it's taking all the fun out of the charts. I have heard that the people at the fantastic strictly come dancing are releasing the theme tune in time for christmas with Aleesha singing the lyrics to it. It would be good (if true) if it could sneak in there ahead of Leon. However i don't think there's any doubt that Leon will get the Christmas number one this year sadly.
